Evaluation of test (pilot) injections
Installment of permeable reactive barriers
The pilot tests applied in June 2016 in two contaminated aquifers (Barreiro, Portugal, and La Felguera, Spain) were evaluated in terms of the effect of nanoparticle injection on hydrogeology of aquifers and on removal of heavy metals from groundwater. In Barreiro it was observed that the nanoparticles showed reduced mobility. Therefore a modification of nanoparticles […]
New article generated within REGROUND Project
During April and May 2017, REGROUND applied first full-scale installment of permeable reactive barrier using Iron-oxide nanoparticles. The injections took place in same contaminated aquifers as pilot injections (June 2016); one in Barreiro, Portugal, and one in La Felguera, Spain. Prior to application, a remediation and monitoring plan was prepared. At each site, 9 injection […]
Development hightlights in 2016
TITLE: “Colloidal behavior of goethite nanoparticles modified with humic acid and implications for aquifer reclamation” AUTHORS: Alberto Tiraferri, Laura Andrea Saldarriaga Hernandez, Carlo Bianco, Tiziana Tosco, Rajandrea Sethi (POLITO). RELEASE DATE: 11 March 2017 LINK: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11051-017-3814-x ABSTRACT: Nanosized colloids of iron oxide adsorb heavy metals, enhance the biodegradation of contaminants, and represent a promising technology to clean up contaminated aquifers. Goethite particles for aquifer reclamation were recently synthesized with […]
REGROUND Newsletter Nº2 | November 2016
Two main developments are: Performing test injections New set of nanoparticles REGROUND has successfully completed two pilot (test) injections in field sites in Spain and Portugal. The aim of these injections were to test the mobility of REGROUND nanoparticles in real aquifer, and therefore their ability to build a permeable reactive barrier. At this stage, […]

Test injections in the REGROUND pilot sites
Daniela Montalvo, from KU Leuven, presented their work for REGROUND Project in the Latin American Soil Science Congress of Quito (Ecuador) last week. It was a brief speech entitled “Arsenic removal by reactive barriers of goethite nanoparticles: batch and column experiments“.
Science in big-scale
During the last week of June, the first test injections were carried out in the REGROUND pilot sites in Asturias, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal.
REGROUND in the KIMConference 2016
First batch of large-scale nanoparticles for remediation of heavy metals in groundwater are being produced in UDE. These particles are planned to be injected in next two weeks in two fields (Spain and Portugal). In total, ca. 60 cubic meters of nanoparticle suspension will be used in this step, to evaluate the efficiency (performance) of […]
6M meeting in Lisbon (Portugal)
The REGROUND project was at the KIM Conference which took place the 14th of June in Barcelona. In the frame of the conference, the coordinator participated in the round table on the contribution of the European Commission in promoting circular economy.
The partners of the project recently met in Lisbon (Portugal) on the 1st and 2nd of March to have the first 6 monthly meeting to review the activities already conducted and coordinate those to come, as work on the different aspects of the project is getting into full swing. On the agenda over the two […]
